BPA - Writing
Intent
At Broadfield Primary Academy (BPA), we strive to give our children the best start in establishing secure foundations in literacy. Our primary intent is to create a thriving community of storytellers, giving the children the foundations for greater depth learning and living. We recognise the fundamental importance of talking and reading for writing; talking in order to learn the technical elements and reading for enhancing the range of vocabulary.
Our school follows the Talk for Writing programme, which allows our children to become successful storytellers and authors. We encourage our children to become curious about their own and others’ writing, including authors, poets and peers. Children will develop their own ideas and become independent writers.
Implementation
The Talk for Writing approach is emerging throughout our school from Early Years to Year 6. The approach enables children to become confident and independent writers by teaching them the toolkits to be able to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. We underpin our English curriculum by having a core reading spine of quality fiction, poetry and non fiction that all children draw upon when reading as writers and writing as readers.
Impact
The impact of our writing curriculum can be clearly seen across the school through children talking about their love of writing, the quality of texts the children are reading and the quality of the writing being produced, the quality of teaching across the school and results achieved at KS2. By the time children leave BPA, they are competent and passionate writers who have a thirst for writing, and participate in discussions about their writing, including evaluating an author’s use of language and the impact this can have on them as readers.
